Body Language Can Make Or Break Recruitment

coach interview, body language

Are you sending the right message?

It's a familiar scene: Sweaty palms. Nervous ticks. Knees buckling. And that's just from your parents!

With your own heart pounding mercilessly away, it's all you can do to stand upright during meetings with college coaches and stammer out your name. But questions and qualifications aren't the only thing making an impression during these all-important get-togethers: 55% of communication is body language, so sharpen your pencil and take some notes on how to pack a punch with posture and more.

Confident body language will immediately demonstrate that you're a levelheaded young whippersnapper who's ready to take on the responsibility of college life. Make sure to:

  1. Keep your head up and your shoulders back to indicate your interest and sincerity. Nothing says "I'm bored" like slumped posture.

  2. Give a firm handshake. Ever grabbed a fistful of wet spaghetti? A limp handshake is just as unpleasant, so make sure you are sweat free, poised, and enthusiastic so you can deliver the right message.

  3. Leave your phone at home. What's more annoying than having someone text in the middle of a conversation? Not a whole lot. It's a surefire way to tell Coach you aren't that interested and he or she can look for another candidate to take your place on their list.

  4. Make eye contact and gesture with your hands. A captivating conversation will naturally include these key components and demonstrate your interest. If you find your eyes wandering down to the floor or your hands reaching into your pockets, give yourself a mental slap and re-engage in the conversation so you can demonstrate your excitement for the program with the right body language.

The recruitment process is littered with stressful moments like these, so it's important to remember that locating the right college isn't about being impressive or 'the best': it's all about fit and compatibility. Learn more finding the right college for you here!
