Social Media - The Importance of It

Keyboard blog

There are many parents that question the importance of an athlete's presence on social media. Coming from a generation that valued privacy, their concern is a sincere expression of ethics. However, with the surge of social media presence now, it is only natural that people want to express themselves online. Here are three ways social media can help athletes.

1. An online presence can help athletes make connections with college coaches.

Coaches are able to see updates in ways that could not before. They are able to interact with athletes by watching their posts/tweets and liking them or responding to them. This is a direct way in which coaches can contact athletes.

2. Social media is a way athletes can connect with athletes they look up to.

Athletes are able to connect and follow athletes that they look up to. Forms of social media like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and blogs give athletes the ability to connect and learn from other athletes, whether its technique or how they handle themselves in different situations.

3. Athletes are able to share their accomplishments on social media.

Athletes work hard, especially when they're juggling sports, school, travel, and relationships. When athletes receive honors and awards, it's important to celebrate and show that hard work pays off. Social media allows athletes to share their successes and celebrate with others.

We hope to alleviate some of the concerns that parents have regarding social media and highlight the importance it holds today.
