I believe that I am best academically and as a person when I play sports. I believe that being a student athlete helps me focus and gives me the discipline to succeed in school.
There are several ways that I pursue a healthy athletic performance. First, I believe it is essential to get no less than 8 hours of sleep per night. I believe that a healthy body starts with sufficient sleep. Second, I do not drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, or use illegal drugs of any kind. Third, I believe that it is extremely important to get a variety of exercise. In addition to water polo and swim practice, I play pick up basketball, I lift weights, I ride my bike, and I remain activity in daily life. I also limit my sedentary life - especially how much time I spend online. Lastly, I am very careful with the food that I consume. When I started my freshman year, I was 5'5" and weighed about 190 lbs. I decided that I wanted to change the trajectory of my athletic career. After 6 months of hard work, I dropped 25 lbs and grew about 6 inches. I believe that being a healthy athlete takes a great deal of hard work and I do not take my health for granted.
I work at the local soup kitchen through my church - the Sheil Center at Northwestern University. My family and I purchase, prepare, and serve food to the homeless people in our community. Then, we sit and have dinner with them and talk about current events or things that are on their minds. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have grown up in Evanston, Illinois. In my town and in Chicago just miles from my house, there are people, who through no fault of their own, have lost everything and have no place to live. The soup kitchen gives me an opportunity to help people who live close to me who have not been as fortunate as I have been in my life.
